Deltarune is indie developer Toby Fox's follow-up to his acclaimed game Undertale. Although it's not a sequel, it shares many similarities to Undertale. It has the same gameplay that rewards peaceful interaction, as well as combat.

Great storytelling compensates for the no-frills graphics.
Deltarune is not a direct sequel to Undertale. The game is short, with only a couple of hours of gameplay. It is, however, only chapter 1 in a much larger piece of work, and it's free.
The graphics of the game are Top-down 2D and not filled with detail. There is a great deal of creativity in the title, but this is more apparent in the storyline and game mechanics.
The world draws on humor. You'll find sarcastic joke galore and characters who won't always do what you would expect.
The combat system is similar to that of its predecessor. It's turn-based and features a bullet-hell style minigame. It's also a mechanism for earning tension points that can be used for casting spells.
Combat is not the only way to progress through the game. It's possible to take a non-violent approach and talk rather than fight.
In addition to being a game developer, Toby Fox is an accomplished musician who wrote all of the songs that feature in the Deltarune. This music is married well to the game, providing an optimal atmosphere.
When you compare this with Toby Fox's previous game, there are some tweaks to the game mechanics, with no significant innovations. If you like Undertale you will probably enjoy Deltarune.

Is there a better alternative?
No, but there are plenty of indie RPGs out there. Dwarf Fortress is considerably larger in scale. If you're looking for something more open-ended, that would be the way to go.

Deltarune is another solid piece of storytelling. Its story, sense of humor, and focus on characters bode well for the remaining chapters.
